Los Angeles mayoral candidates Bass and Raman clash in first debate
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and City Councilmember Nithya Raman engaged in an acrimonious first face-to-face debate ahead of the November 3 mayoral runoff. The candidates clashed sharply over public safety, policing, and the city's homelessness crisis.
During the exchange, Bass criticized Raman's collaborative abilities and leadership on the council's homelessness committee, noting that Raman had missed thousands of votes. Raman countered by criticizing Bass's management of homelessness, arguing that while numbers improved in certain districts, they worsened citywide. Bass defended her record by citing the Inside Safe program, which has moved over 6,200 people indoors.
The debate, organized by the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association, faced technical difficulties when the virtual livestream reached its maximum capacity, preventing many residents from viewing the event.
In the June primary, Bass secured 34% of the vote and Raman secured 29%. Recent campaign finance reports indicate Bass holds a significant financial advantage, having raised over $510,000 compared to Raman's $170,000.
