Los Angeles officials announce crime reductions and new crisis response system
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and city council members announced a significant decrease in violent crime over the last four years. According to city data, reported homicides have decreased by 47%, representing 161 fewer deaths, while victims shot citywide have dropped by 50%. In the San Fernando Valley, officials reported a 41% decrease in burglaries, a 21% decrease in robberies, and a 31% decrease in motor vehicle thefts compared to the previous year.
To complement these safety efforts, Mayor Bass has issued an executive directive to modernize the city’s 911 emergency response system. The directive establishes a unified call center to streamline the dispatch of unarmed civilian crisis response teams, replacing two previously separate centers used by the CIRCLE and Unarmed Mobile Crisis Response programs. The plan also aims to accelerate the recruitment and retention of 911 dispatchers and modernize communication technology to reduce wait times and improve response efficiency.
