Los Angeles officials debate bike lane infrastructure and design
In West Hollywood, City Councilmember Lauren Meister has introduced a motion to revise the Fountain Avenue Streetscape Project. The proposal seeks to eliminate planned protected bike lanes to preserve approximately 210 on-street parking spaces. The current approved design would remove 60% of street parking, which city staff noted would heavily impact residents and visitors in an area with limited off-street parking. The alternative design would reduce Fountain Avenue to one travel lane in each direction with a center turn lane, omitting bike lanes while retaining pedestrian safety measures.
In Los Angeles, a City Council committee unanimously approved a motion requesting a report on the resources needed for the Department of Transportation to install durable bike lane barriers in-house. Councilwoman Heather Hutt noted that many existing protected lanes use plastic K71 bollards, which she described as a “temporary treatment” that requires replacement every seven months. The motion explores the use of modular, Toronto-style concrete barriers as a more durable alternative. Additionally, the committee requested a report on the costs associated with converting existing Class 4 bikeways from plastic bollards to more rigid delineators.
