Los Angeles officials launch initiative to reduce medical debt
Public health officials in Los Angeles County are implementing a new system designed to prevent low-income families from accumulating significant medical debt. The initiative aims to allow hospitals across the county to easily screen patients for available financial aid, potentially preventing several hundred million dollars in debt annually.
In Los Angeles County, officials estimate that approximately 800,000 residents struggle with medical bills they cannot pay. Naman Shah, a physician and epidemiologist with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, noted that medical debt often leads to a cycle of high-interest credit card debt and poverty, causing patients to forgo essential prescriptions and medical appointments.
While hospitals typically offer financial assistance to low-income patients, the process is often difficult to navigate. Research indicates that many eligible individuals remain unaware of available aid or find the application process too cumbersome to complete.
