Los Angeles Rams address special teams challenges
The Los Angeles Rams are working to stabilize their special teams units following recent performance issues. Head coach Sean McVay recently utilized an unusual roster strategy by activating both a field goal kicker, Brandon McManus, and a kickoff specialist, Joshua Karty, during a game against the Chargers.
McManus successfully converted all four of his attempts, including a 30-yard field goal. However, Karty faced difficulties, receiving penalties for two kickoffs that fell short of the landing zone. McVay noted that while Karty’s ability to hit difficult balls can prevent clean returns, the penalties that placed the ball at the 40-yard line were problematic.
The team has also dealt with instability at the long-snapper position. With Cardona missing practice, the Rams may rely on McQuaide, a former Pro Bowl long-snapper for the team, to fill the role for upcoming games.
