Los Angeles Rams limit Matthew Stafford, test rookie QBs Ty Simpson, Stetson Bennett
During the first practice of training camp, the Los Angeles Rams deliberately limited veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford’s repetitions. The coaching staff used the reduced reps to focus on evaluating the two rookie quarterbacks drafted in 2024: first‑round pick Ty Simpson and fourth‑round pick Stetson Bennett, who is expected to serve as Stafford’s heir apparent.
Offensive coordinator Nate Scheelhaase praised both players. Bennett completed passes to receivers Puka Nacua and Davante Adams and to running back Kyren Williams, but a deep throw intended for Adams was intercepted. Simpson threw several short passes, with his longest attempt broken up by a defender. The Rams, defending Super Bowl champions and favorites to repeat, are working to secure a capable backup for Stafford as former starter Jimmy Garoppolo has retired.
