Los Angeles Rams waive punt returner Xavier Smith

The Los Angeles Rams have waived wide receiver and punt returner Xavier Smith, signaling a shift in the team’s special teams strategy. The move comes less than 24 hours after special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone stated the team was not considering a change at the position, noting that while he had trust in Smith, the player had been “inconsistent” in fielding punts and tracking the ball.

Smith, an undrafted free agent signed in 2023, struggled with consistency during the first three games of the season, often putting the offense in poor field position. The Rams have named Alex Bachman as his replacement.
