Los Angeles to pay $5.8 million in LAPD fatal shooting settlement

The city of Los Angeles has agreed to a $5.8 million settlement with the family of Jason Maccani, who was fatally shot by a rookie LAPD officer in 2024. The incident occurred when Maccani, who was experiencing a mental health crisis, approached officers responding to an assault call in a Skid Row warehouse while holding a plastic fork.

Footage from body-worn cameras showed that after being struck by a 40-millimeter projectile, Maccani moved toward several officers while holding the utensil. During a struggle, Officer Caleb Garcia-Alamilla fired a shot at point-blank range, striking Maccani in the arm and chest. An autopsy confirmed Maccani had no drugs in his system.

The settlement concludes a two-year legal dispute. The shooting previously drew condemnation from city officials and then-Police Chief Michel Moore. Maccani's mother expressed disappointment regarding the lack of systemic accountability despite the financial resolution.
