Los Angeles trash house triggers new health investigation
A notorious property in the Fairfax District of Los Angeles has once again become surrounded by massive piles of debris, prompting a new investigation by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. The residence, located on the 600 block of North Martel Avenue, is currently facing inspection by the Environmental Health division to check for sanitation violations, accumulated garbage, and potential rodent or vermin infestations.
This marks a recurring issue for the site, which has undergone multiple major cleanups in recent years. In 2024, Mayor Karen Bass declared the site a public health emergency, leading to a multi-agency operation that removed approximately seven tons of garbage. Despite these efforts, the trash has returned, leading to renewed complaints from neighbors regarding odors and swarming insects.
Findings from the upcoming inspection will be shared with the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety and the county Department of Mental Health to determine necessary legal or corrective actions. Previous attempts to resolve the issue include misdemeanor charges filed in 2017, though that specific case was dismissed in 2019.
