Los Angeles Unified School District board moves to fire Superintendent Alberto Carvalho before his resignation
The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Board of Education prepared a vote to terminate Superintendent Alberto Carvalho in early June 2026. Internal letters obtained through public‑records requests detail accusations of unprofessional conduct and unsatisfactory performance, including alleged failure to disclose outside consulting income, receipt of gifts such as Dodgers tickets, donor‑funded travel, and misuse of district resources like a district‑provided car and driver for personal purposes. The board also claimed Carvalho bypassed IT policy by seeking access to the Telegram messaging app, which the district deemed a high cyber‑risk.
Carvalho, who had been on administrative leave since February after a federal raid on his home and office, resigned in late June, days before the planned termination vote. His legal team at Holland & Knight issued a detailed rebuttal, calling the board’s action a “political hit job” and asserting that the alleged perks were publicly disclosed and permissible under his contract. The attorneys further maintained that no laws were broken and that the district’s own investigation confirmed Carvalho’s compliance with legal requirements.
