Los Angeles Unified School District implements strict screen-time limits

Educational institutions are facing a growing backlash regarding the use of technology in classrooms. The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has implemented a strict new screen-time policy to address concerns over student device usage. Under these rules, pre-K through first-grade students are prohibited from using school devices for instruction, while older elementary students are limited to 60 minutes of daily use. Middle and high school students face subject-specific limits, with a weekly maximum of 600 minutes.

While some educators advocate for these restrictions to combat screen addiction and cognitive decline, others warn against a total rejection of educational technology. Proponents of balanced integration suggest that while student-facing technology must be managed carefully to ensure cognitive effort remains central to learning, AI-powered tools can be highly beneficial when used to support teachers. Specialized tools designed to assist with administrative or instructional preparation can improve teacher effectiveness without undermining the learning process.
