Los Angeles water main break floods Fairfax District streets
An 8‑inch water main on First Street at Detroit Avenue in Los Angeles' Fairfax District ruptured at about 2:40 a.m., creating a sinkhole and flooding the roadway. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power shut off the flow, closed First Street between Detroit and La Brea Avenue, and repaired the line by the afternoon, restoring service to the sole affected customer. One parked car was damaged and a resident reported water entering her vehicle, planning to file a claim with the utility.
The incident follows a series of recent main breaks in the city, including a July 16 rupture of a 36‑inch pipe in West Hollywood that flooded the Sunset Strip, and earlier bursts near Paramount Studios and on Santa Monica Boulevard. Officials have been conducting emergency repairs and temporary street paving to address the recurring infrastructure failures.
