Los Angeles woman sues city over 2025 protest projectile injuries

A woman identified as Joyti Chand filed a civil lawsuit in Los Angeles County Superior Court on July 10, 2025, claiming she was struck by eleven less‑lethal kinetic projectiles during an immigration demonstration on June 8, 2025. The incident occurred near the intersection of First and San Pedro Streets in downtown Los Angeles, where law‑enforcement agencies—including the Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and the California Highway Patrol—were deployed for crowd control. Chand alleges the rounds hit her legs, groin and back, causing severe, prolonged pain, loss of earnings, anxiety, fear and nightmares. The complaint alleges civil‑rights violations, battery, negligence and assault, and seeks unspecified compensatory and punitive damages. City and county officials have not yet responded, and the case remains in its preliminary stages.
