Sinaloa prison riots lead to transfer of 49 inmates

Following violent riots at the El Castillo prison in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, which resulted in 12 deaths, federal authorities have transferred 49 inmates to other correctional facilities across Mexico. The transfer included 48 individuals from El Castillo—comprising 47 men and one woman—and one inmate from the Aguaruto prison in Culiacán.

Sinaloa Attorney General Zulema Sánchez Kondo confirmed that investigators recovered both short and long firearm shell casings at the El Castillo facility. The investigation is treating the incidents as intentional homicide. Security officials, including Secretary of Security and Protection Omar García Harfuch, indicated that one of the clashes was linked to a dispute between members of the Los Chapitos faction. The transfers aim to decompress the prison system in Sinaloa following the recent instability.
