Los Cabos leads extortion complaints in Baja California Sur

Los Cabos has recorded the highest number of extortion investigations in Baja California Sur, according to data from the Secretariado Ejecutivo del Sistema Nacional de Seguridad Pública (SESNSP). Between January and August 2026, the state accumulated 120 extortion complaints, an increase from the 86 reported during the same period in 2025.

Of these complaints, 64 are concentrated in Los Cabos, followed by La Paz with 40 cases. Most incidents (105) were classified as occurring through means other than in-person contact. Authorities have issued warnings regarding ‘virtual kidnapping,’ a tactic where criminals use phone calls to convince victims that a family member has been abducted to pressure them into making immediate deposits.
