Los Gallardos fire victims launch platform to avert future tragedies

A group of residents, lawyers and sector representatives from Bédar and Los Gallardos have created a platform to study the July 9 wildfire that swept through Los Gallardos in Almería, killing 14 people. The platform, promoted by local lawyer Gerardo Vázquez, will present its findings publicly on Wednesday at 13:00 in Bédar and will propose concrete measures to prevent a repeat of such a disaster.

The initiative will analyse the emergency response, from the Alerty warning system and evacuations to urban, forest and agricultural planning, with input from farmers, ecologists, jurists and climate experts. The Junta de Andalucía had activated Situación Operativa 1 of the Forest Fire Emergency Plan three hours after the fire began, evacuating around 50 residents. Organisers note that this is the third major fire in the area after incidents in Mojácar (2009) and Bédar (2012), underscoring the perceived high risk of recurrence.
