Los Glaciares National Park hosts first discovered Chaltén frog breeding site

Scientists have confirmed the first known active breeding and nursery site for the Chaltén frog (Chaltenobatrachus grandisonae) within Los Glaciares National Park in Patagonia. The discovery occurred in the Moyano section of the park during routine inspections by a park ranger.

Taxonomic validation was provided by specialists Dr. Evangelina Soledad Vettese and Dr. Diego Barrasso, who identified the specimens as pure larval stages. This finding confirms that the water basin serves as a vital sanctuary for oviposition rather than just a transit area for adult frogs. The species is endemic to the cold mountain environments of southern Argentina and Chile.
