Los Lagos Region faces budget uncertainty for Curaco landfill replacement
In the Los Lagos Region of Chile, concerns are rising regarding potential budget cuts for 2027 that could jeopardize the replacement of the Curaco landfill. Alexis Casanova, president of the Environmental Commission of the Los Lagos Regional Council, warned that a reduction in resources could stall the financing of a definitive solution for the facility, which is currently operating at maximum capacity.
The project to replace the landfill requires a multi-billion peso investment. Casanova emphasized the need for coordinated action between the Regional Government, the solid waste unit, and the Osorno municipality, particularly as urban growth in the Rahue sector approaches the Curaco area. There is specific concern for municipalities with limited budgets, such as San Juan de la Costa and Puyehue, which rely on the current site.
