Los Libertadores pass reopens after 34-day snow closure
The Cristo Redentor/Los Libertadores international mountain pass is set to reopen on Tuesday, August 18, following a 34-day closure caused by extreme snowstorms and severe weather in the Andes.
To manage the massive backlog of thousands of stranded trucks, authorities have established a progressive, unidirectional reopening schedule. From August 18 to August 20, transit will be restricted exclusively to cargo moving from Argentina to Chile. From August 21 to August 22, the direction will reverse, allowing cargo to move from Chile to Argentina. During this initial phase, passenger vehicles and buses remain prohibited from using the pass.
The prolonged closure has had significant economic consequences. The Chamber of Customs estimates losses at approximately US$200 million due to operational overcosts and delays. The pass is a critical artery for regional trade, handling over 70% of land cargo between Chile and Argentina. Authorities have mandated the use of tire chains for all vehicles traveling through the corridor due to persisting winter conditions.
