Sinaloa security crisis: Navy deployment in Mazatlán and violence in Los Mochis

Sinaloa is experiencing a significant escalation in violence, marked by major security operations and tragic incidents in Mazatlán and Los Mochis. In Mazatlán, over 1,700 Navy personnel have been deployed under 'Operación Sable' to restore order following a territorial dispute between criminal factions. This deployment included a rural operation in El Roble that resulted in the arrest of 28 individuals and the seizure of 15 long weapons, 94 magazines, and thousands of rounds of ammunition.

In Los Mochis, a violent confrontation between the National Guard and armed civilians occurred in the Scally sector, interrupting a religious service at the Nuestra Señora de Fátima parish. The shootout led to the arrest of eight individuals and the crash of a vehicle into a tree. Additionally, a fatal fire at the El Mesón Casa de Restauración rehabilitation center resulted in two deaths and five injuries due to smoke inhalation. Authorities are investigating whether the fire was an accident or a riot.

Broad security actions across the state have also led to the seizure of 46 firearms and over 12,000 cartridges, alongside the neutralization of methamphetamine production sites in Culiacán. These coordinated efforts by the Gabinete de Seguridad aim to disrupt organized crime, though local authorities note the ongoing instability affects both residents and the tourism sector.
