Fernanda Gastélum, pregnant teacher, fatally shot in Los Mochis

Fernanda Gastélum Osorio, a 31-year-old primary education teacher, was fatally shot in Los Mochis, Sinaloa. The attack occurred on Monday, September 28, while she was at her residence or arriving at her property in the Ampliación 12 de Octubre neighborhood. Gastélum, who was seven months pregnant, received five gunshot wounds to her chest, arm, and head.

Following the shooting, her husband rushed her to a private hospital, where medical staff performed an emergency cesarean section in an attempt to save the unborn child. Despite these efforts, both the mother and the seven-month-old fetus died from their injuries.

The Sinaloa State Attorney General's Office, led by Claudia Zulema Sánchez Kondo, has opened an investigation under the femicide protocol. While authorities are currently exploring a personal motive as a primary line of inquiry, feminist collectives such as Violetas Ingobernables are demanding the case be treated strictly with a gender perspective due to the circumstances of the attack.

This incident occurs amid heightened security presence in Sinaloa, where the federal government has deployed over 3,500 security elements to combat ongoing violence related to cartel conflicts in the region.
