Los Perales Airport rehabilitation planned in Manabí

Authorities are working to rehabilitate the Los Perales Airport in the San Vicente canton of Manabí, Ecuador, to prepare for the potential impacts of the El Niño phenomenon. The project aims to restore the airport's operational capacity to prevent the region from becoming isolated during climate emergencies.

During the 1997-1998 El Niño event, the airport served as a critical lifeline when road networks were severed, allowing for the transport of food, fuel, medicine, and the evacuation of residents. Given the current red alert for El Niño in Ecuador, officials emphasize the urgency of these works.

A technical inspection involving the National Secretariat for Risk Management and the Ministry of Transport has been conducted to assess the infrastructure. Following these reports, the next step involves requesting budget allocations from the Ministry of Finance to fund the necessary repairs. Once rehabilitated, the terminal is expected to function as a strategic logistics center and a primary hub for receiving humanitarian aid in the northern Manabí region.
