Los Reyes Cartel leader Luis Enrique Barragán Chávez killed in Michoacán

Mexican federal authorities have confirmed the death of Luis Enrique Barragán Chávez, known as ‘El Wicho’ or ‘R5’, during an armed confrontation in Michoacán. The incident occurred in the El Rodeo del Pinal area, within the municipalities of Los Reyes and Tocumbo.

Barragán Chávez was identified as a high-ranking leader of the Los Reyes Cartel, a group belonging to the Cárteles Unidos alliance. He was specifically noted as a primary coordinator of extortion networks targeting avocado and lemon producers in the region. The United States government had previously placed a reward of up to 3 million dollars on his capture due to his involvement in transnational drug and weapons trafficking.

The operation was a coordinated effort involving the Mexican Army (Sedena), the National Guard, and the Michoacán Civil Guard. During the clash, federal forces reported that two individuals were killed, including Barragán Chávez and an alleged teenage bodyguard. Authorities also seized automatic rifles, ammunition, and a quad bike at the scene. This development follows the recent arrest of another key figure, Alfonso Fernández Magallón, alias ‘Poncho La Quiringua’, on August 1.
