Los Reyes La Paz transport workers protest after fatal attack
Transport workers in Los Reyes La Paz, State of Mexico, held a four-hour blockade on the Mexico-Texcoco and Mexico-Puebla highways to protest rising insecurity and extortion. The protest followed a violent armed attack on a Ruta 69 public transport unit on Sunday, which resulted in the death of 10-year-old Erari Daylan. The girl's parents were also injured during the shooting.
Transport representatives reported that criminal groups have been demanding “derecho de piso” (extortion payments) via telephone numbers left on paper notes. According to drivers, refusal to pay has led to increased violence, including the burning of five vehicles and various injuries to workers over the last year.
The blockade was lifted after state authorities agreed to establish working groups and commit to immediate security measures to protect the transport sector.
