Los Ríos agriculture faces heavy losses from rain and wind

Heavy rains and strong winds have caused significant damage to agricultural crops in the Los Ríos province of Ecuador. Estimates from local producers suggest that approximately 10,000 hectares across six cantons—including Buena Fe, Ventanas, Urdaneta, Montalvo, Pueblo Viejo, and Babahoyo—have been partially or totally affected.

Maize is among the most impacted crops, with initial estimates of 1,000 hectares being revised upward to approximately 5,000 hectares. Other affected crops include plantains, cocoa, soy, peanuts, and rice. The economic impact is substantial, as the investment to produce one hectare of maize ranges between $1,800 and $2,000.

Producers, represented by the Association of Short-Cycle Agricultural Production (Asopracort), are calling for urgent government assistance and banking support for those with outstanding credits, noting that not all farmers have agricultural insurance. Additionally, they are requesting the cleaning of drainage channels to prevent further flooding, water stagnation, and the spread of fungi and diseases caused by excessive moisture.
