Los Ríos Region launches circular economy waste strategy

The Los Ríos Region has launched its Regional Solid Waste Management and Circular Economy Strategy, titled ‘Los Ríos Fluye Circular’. The initiative aims to address long-standing gaps in sustainable waste policy, including the current crisis in Morrompulli, insufficient infrastructure, and low waste valorization rates.

Projected through 2037, the strategy includes 21 initiatives with an investment portfolio exceeding $42 billion pesos. Key components involve the development of composting plants, clean points, collection centers, waste valorization infrastructure, transfer stations, environmental education, and innovation.

The plan emphasizes reducing the volume of waste sent to landfills by promoting composting, recycling, and household waste separation. A primary goal is to have more than 50% of households separate waste at the source and to valorize 50% of municipal solid waste.
