Los Tigres del Norte defend their message after NPR Tiny Desk controversy
Mexican musical group Los Tigres del Norte have addressed the controversy surrounding their Tiny Desk performance after National Public Radio (NPR) temporarily removed a segment concerning the migrant community from the YouTube version of the concert.
The controversy arose when viewers noticed the omission of an introductory speech by journalist and producer Félix Contreras, who had spoken about the challenges facing the Latino community in the United States. In response, the group released a statement on Instagram defending the importance of their message, stating, “Because every voice counts and every space matters, because we believe that what we have to tell deserves to be heard, not censored.”
The band expressed gratitude for the public support they received following the incident and confirmed they worked to ensure the message was restored. They noted that the experiences and feelings of their people have long served as the inspiration for their music, which frequently addresses themes of migration, identity, and the difficulties faced by those seeking better opportunities.
