NPR restores Los Tigres del Norte Tiny Desk video after censorship controversy

NPR Music has restored the full version of Los Tigres del Norte’s Tiny Desk concert following public backlash over the removal of an introductory speech. The Mexican musical group performed as part of NPR’s annual series celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month.

Originally, the YouTube upload omitted a segment by producer and Alt. Latino co-host Félix Contreras. In the deleted portion, Contreras addressed the challenges facing the Latino community in the United States, referencing historical events such as the border changes of 1848 and the post-WWII deportation campaign known as Operation Wetback. He stated, “Our community is under attack, and it is not the first time. They strip us of our humanity,” while noting that the band has helped restore that dignity through their music.

NPR initially attributed the edit to an editorial review of the emotional and complex content. However, after widespread criticism from fans and social media users accusing the network of censorship, the organization reinstated the complete introduction on its official website and announced its return to YouTube.
