Lota highway remains blocked following major landslide
In Lota, Chile, emergency crews are working to clear the Fernando Maira highway following a significant landslide. The collapse occurred near the 21 de Mayo curve in the Gabriela Mistral sector, where a mass of earth approximately three meters high and up to 80 meters long blocked both lanes of traffic.
Heavy machinery, including backhoes and at least five trucks, has been deployed to remove the debris. While initial concerns were raised regarding a potential vehicle trapped under the earth, security footage confirmed no vehicles were involved, and no injuries have been reported. Bío Bío Presidential Delegate Julio Anativia confirmed that authorities are monitoring the situation closely and coordinating with municipal teams.
Additional risks have emerged in the area, with a new landslide reported in the Lota Green sector. Emergency teams are currently evaluating the extent of this new incident to prevent further disruptions or hazards.
