Lothar Matthäus defends Kimmich, decries FIFA‑Trump interference after Germany’s World Cup exit

Former German captain Lothar Matthäus praised national‑team captain Joshua Kimmich after Germany’s surprise loss to Paraguay in the World Cup round of 16, saying Kimmich “has the eggs” for accepting responsibility rather than making excuses.

Matthäus also warned that the German side’s right‑back area remains a problem, citing players such as Josha Vagnoman and Nnamdi Collins as examples of flawed selections that contributed to defensive issues.

Separately, he condemned a recent FIFA disciplinary decision that was allegedly influenced by U.S. President Donald Trump, which allowed US striker Folarin Balogun to avoid a suspension after a red card. Matthäus called the political meddling “manipulation” and said it undermines the sport’s integrity.
