Lotusland Garden in Montecito Undergoes Renovation Review

Lotusland, the 37‑acre botanical garden in Montecito, California, created over decades by Polish opera singer Ganna Walska, is pursuing a 20‑year master‑plan renovation. The plan includes a new front‑gate roundabout on Cold Springs Road, staff housing, a horticulture complex, restrooms, a greenhouse, an orchard pavilion, and additional workforce housing units.

The Montecito Board of Architectural Review raised concerns about the roundabout’s dimensions, asking the garden’s team to provide a 3‑D rendering of the proposed 60‑foot‑diameter design and suggesting a larger 70‑80‑foot diameter to better accommodate larger vehicles. Board members also questioned the size of the smallest staff housing units (approximately 400 sq ft) and urged consideration of larger units. The board will review revised plans before they move to the Montecito Planning Commission. Public access to Lotusland remains limited due to its residential neighborhood location.
