Lou Gramm criticizes modern rock trends and radio landscape

Former Foreigner singer Lou Gramm has expressed skepticism regarding the current state of rock music, suggesting it would take a ‘miracle’ to return the genre to its former radio prominence. In a recent interview with Classic Album Review, Gramm criticized contemporary chart-topping music as being overly commercial, middle-of-the-road, and ‘very poppy,’ questioning if it even qualifies as rock.

Gramm noted that classic tracks such as Foreigner’s ‘Hot Blooded’ would likely never receive airplay in the modern musical landscape. He expressed hope that the industry could be steered back toward a direction that supports skilled rock musicians and songwriters.

His comments echo previous sentiments made by KISS bassist Gene Simmons, who once claimed that rock music was ‘murdered’ due to the difficulty of earning a living in the genre and the decline of record label support following the rise of file-sharing. The discussion highlights the ongoing debate regarding rock's displacement by genres such as hip-hop, pop, and EDM in mainstream popularity.
