Lou Koller, founder of hardcore band Sick of It All, dies at 59

Lou Koller, the co‑founder and lead vocalist of New York hardcore group Sick of It All, died on 24 July at age 59 after battling esophageal cancer. The band announced his death on Instagram, noting his influence on the global hardcore scene and the cancellation of a European tour for his treatment.

Koller first revealed his diagnosis in the summer of 2024, describing a tumor that had spread from his esophagus to his stomach. After a brief remission announced in May 2025, the disease returned, leading to his passing. The hardcore community organized benefit concerts and fundraising efforts in his honor.

Musicians across the punk and metal worlds paid tribute. Rob Flynn of Machine Head recalled Koller’s humor, Biohazard’s drummer Danny Schuler called the loss “an absolute tragedy,” and Rise Against shared a photo from a joint tour, describing him as “a frontman like no other.” These statements underscored Koller’s lasting impact on four decades of hardcore music.
