Loudoun County evaluates data center approval processes

The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors is evaluating the approval process for data centers, emphasizing the industry's role in maintaining the county's AAA credit rating. With 250 data centers currently operating, the sector generates approximately $1.3 billion in annual revenue for the county.

Supervisors recently discussed a proposal regarding 17 data centers that were grandfathered under previous requirements on March 18, 2025. The board expressed concerns regarding the legal risks and costs associated with changing regulations for developers mid-process. Ultimately, the board voted 9-0 to have legal staff assess the potential implications of the proposal.
