Loudoun County faces challenges as world's largest data center hub expands

Loudoun County, Virginia, known as ‘Data Center Alley,’ hosts the world’s highest concentration of data centers. Currently, 233 facilities are either completed or under construction, covering more than 45 million square meters—approximately 3% of the county's total land area.

The industry has significant economic influence, contributing 40% of the local municipal budget and helping make Loudoun the wealthiest county in the United States, with a median per capita income of $180,000. The sector has also created an estimated 17,000 jobs.

However, the rapid expansion presents challenges for residents. Local citizens report constant noise from power plants and diesel emissions that cause health issues such as migraines, conjunctivitis, and respiratory problems. Additionally, the massive energy demand is impacting the region; in 2024, data centers consumed 40% of Virginia’s total electricity, contributing to higher utility bills for households. The utility provider, Dominion, projects demand could exceed 40 gigawatts, necessitating further high-voltage power infrastructure.
