Louis Vuitton sales drop in China amid trademark dispute

Louis Vuitton is experiencing a significant sales decline in China, with estimates suggesting a 20-25% drop in August and a 30% decrease in July. This downturn follows a high-profile trademark dispute with Molly Tea, a local Chinese tea chain.

The Suzhou Intermediate People's Court ruled in favor of Louis Vuitton, finding that Molly Tea's four-petal flower logo infringed upon seven of the luxury brand's registered trademarks. The court ordered Molly Tea to cease the infringement and pay 10.3 million yuan (approximately $1.5 million USD) in damages and legal costs. While a legal victory, the ruling has triggered a backlash on Chinese social media platforms such as Weibo, Douyin, and Xiaohongshu.

Public criticism centers on cultural ownership, with many users arguing that the floral patterns used by Molly Tea resemble traditional Chinese 'baoxiang' motifs from the Tang Dynasty. Critics have accused the international brand of attempting to monopolize cultural symbols, leading to a consumer boycott that appears to be impacting the company's revenue in the region.
