Louis XIV: The legacy of the Sun King and his reign in France

Louis XIV, famously known as the ‘Sun King’, holds the record for the longest documented reign of any monarch, ruling France for 72 years and 110 days from 1643 until his death in 1715.

His childhood was marked by poverty and political instability, specifically the Fronde revolts led by the Parisian Parliament and aristocracy. These events reinforced his belief that absolute monarchical power was essential for national stability.

A central part of his legacy was the transformation of the Palace of Versailles from a modest hunting lodge into a massive, luxurious seat of power and culture. The construction and maintenance of the palace were immense undertakings, consuming approximately 14 percent of the annual treasury income.

Louis XIV was also a significant influence on fashion and the arts. He was a passionate participant in royal ballet, often performing roles inspired by Apollo, the sun god. He is also credited with introducing high heels and red soles to the fashion world.
