Louisa Proske debuts at the Metropolitan Opera with ‘Macbeth’

Berlin-based director Louisa Proske has made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, directing a new production of Giuseppe Verdi’s ‘Macbeth’ to open the institution's new season.

Proske, who co-founded the New York-based Heartbeat Opera in 2014, took on the high-profile assignment on short notice after the original director withdrew. While Met productions are typically planned two or more years in advance, Met General Manager Peter Gelb noted that Proske was an obvious choice due to her previous success.

Proske described the rapid preparation as an ‘impossible challenge,’ noting that she was tasked with completing designs almost immediately after being hired. Her production features an all-star cast and a creative team including costume designer Montana Levi Blanco and set designer Jon Bausor.
