Louisiana approves new K-12 physical education standards

The Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education has approved revised K-12 physical education standards, set to be implemented starting with the 2027-2028 school year. The new framework shifts the curriculum focus from theoretical knowledge and naming skills to active physical execution and demonstration of movement.

Key changes include a sequential skill-building approach where movement skills progress from kindergarten through 12th grade. The standards are designed to be flexible, avoiding mandates for specific equipment or facilities to allow teachers to adapt to available spaces. Additionally, students will undergo age-appropriate fitness assessments beginning in kindergarten.

Louisiana Education Secretary Dr. Cade Brumley stated the updates aim to promote lifetime health and combat issues such as obesity and diabetes. The revisions follow a 2025 executive order from President Trump to re-establish the Presidential Fitness Test nationally, alongside a directive from Governor Jeff Landry to integrate fitness testing into Louisiana schools.
