Louisiana attorney held in contempt in Madison Brooks case

A Baton Rouge judge has held defense attorney Caitlin Fowlkes in contempt of court for failing to redact the full name of Madison Brooks in a legal filing. Under Louisiana law, victims of sex crimes must be identified only by their initials in court documents to protect their privacy.

The contempt ruling stems from a July motion filed by Fowlkes, who represents Desmond Carter. Carter is one of the men charged in connection with the alleged gang rape and subsequent death of Brooks, a 19-year-old Louisiana State University student, in 2023.

In the motion, the defense sought to ban spectators from wearing pink in the courtroom, arguing that coordinated displays of support could potentially bias or intimidate jurors. However, Brooks’ family and supporters have used the color pink to honor her memory, noting it was her favorite color. Judge Gail Horne Ray had previously ruled in August that supporters were permitted to wear pink during the proceedings.
