Louisiana audit identifies dozens of inactive or non-compliant state boards

A new report from the Louisiana Legislative Auditor has identified dozens of state boards and commissions that are either inactive, disbanded, or failing to meet reporting requirements. While Louisiana lawmakers recently abolished 25 dormant entities through Act 571, auditors suggest the cleanup process is incomplete.

The audit identifies 15 entities that are inactive, never fully organized, or disbanded. Additionally, 22 entities are listed as active despite having no posted meeting notices or minutes since at least late 2022. Specific examples include the North Bossier Levee and Drainage District Board of Commissioners, which has no members, and the Coastal Louisiana Levee Consortium, which has struggled to reach a quorum due to membership requirements.

Of the 492 active boards and commissions currently on the books, some have failed to respond to requests for financial and personnel data. The Division of Administration has issued notices of noncompliance to relevant legislative committees, and auditors recommend that the Legislature consider either abolishing these inactive boards or taking steps to make them functional.
