Louisiana boat buyers face hidden taxes, fees and insurance costs
Louisiana sets boat registration fees by length: $36 for vessels under 16 ft, $57 for 16‑26 ft, $78 for 26‑40 ft and $99 for 40 ft or longer, with renewals at the same rates. In addition, a title is required for financed, out‑of‑state, homemade or hull‑ID‑unverified boats, adding separate fees.
Buyers also incur a 5 % state sales tax on dealer‑purchased boats, plus local parish and municipal taxes ranging from about 1.85 % to 7 %, capped at $20,000 total tax if paid within 90 days. Beyond that window the cap disappears. Further costs include hurricane‑risk insurance and storage fees that vary by location—whether the boat is kept in water, on a rack or in a driveway. These expenses are often not disclosed at the dealership and appear later in bills, marina statements or insurance claims.
