Louisiana energy projects receive developments in gas storage and offshore data centers

In Louisiana, two distinct energy-related developments are moving forward. Federal regulators have authorized initial construction for the Black Bayou gas storage project in Cameron Parish. Backed by global energy trader Mercuria, the $1.6 billion investment includes a 720-acre site near the Louisiana-Texas border. The project, which received a notice to proceed from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, aims to enhance market efficiency and includes plans to increase working gas capacity to 44.4 billion cubic feet.

Separately, Lafayette-based Forged Energy Solutions is proposing a novel approach to data center infrastructure. The company aims to build modular data centers on abandoned offshore oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. This system would utilize existing offshore gas leases to power turbines, use seawater for cooling, and leverage existing underground cables for data transfer. The proposal seeks to repurpose underutilized gas resources and existing oil industry expertise to meet growing infrastructure needs while minimizing the land-based footprint of data centers.
