Louisiana faces high child poverty and low well-being rankings

Recent reports highlight significant socio-economic challenges in Louisiana, particularly regarding child well-being and poverty. A study by WalletHub ranks Louisiana as the third state with the most underprivileged children in the United States. The state faces severe economic hurdles, including the second-highest share of children living below the poverty line and high rates of food insecurity. Specifically, more than 25 percent of children in Louisiana live in poverty, and the state holds the highest share of low-income households without a working adult.

Additionally, the ‘State of the States’ report, a project by Tulane University’s Murphy Institute, provides a bipartisan analysis of 37 measures of state well-being. While the United States leads in global economic output, the report notes the nation struggles to translate that wealth into improvements in child mortality, mental health, and violence rates.
