Louisiana facility prepares to hold immigrant families and minors
Federal immigration officials are preparing to open a privately-run, 528-bed detention facility at England Airpark in Alexandria, Louisiana. The facility is intended to hold unaccompanied minors and families awaiting deportation. Located near Alexandria International Airport, which serves as a major hub for deportation flights, the site is part of the Trump administration’s efforts to increase deportation activities.
Local community activists and religious leaders held a vigil at the site to protest the facility. Rev. Robin Tanner, president of the Unitarian Universalist Ministers Association, expressed concern regarding the impact of detention on childhood development.
Under federal law, the Office of Refugee Resettlement is directed to reunite unaccompanied children with parents abroad in appropriate cases. Proponents of the administration's policies argue that deporting unaccompanied minors discourages human trafficking and child smuggling, while critics focus on the separation of families and the legal rights of minors in immigration court.
