Louisiana high schools feature unique mascots

Louisiana high schools feature several unique mascots that are not found elsewhere in American sports.

Archbishop Chapelle in Metairie uses the Chipmunks mascot, a choice resulting from a 1964 student council vote. St. Joseph’s Academy in Baton Rouge identifies as the Redstickers, a name derived from the French translation of Baton Rouge, which refers to a red cypress tree. The school also utilizes rotating class mascots including Flamingo, Bee, Turtle, and Dolphin.

In Shreveport, Loyola College Prep uses the Flyers mascot. This identity features Snoopy chasing the Red Baron on school helmets, a concept made possible after teacher Gerald McCaffery contacted creator Charles Schulz in 1966.
