Louisiana homeowners warned of Formosan termite swarms

The LSU AgCenter is warning homeowners across Louisiana about swarming Formosan subterranean termites. The risk extends beyond southern Louisiana into northwest regions, including Shreveport and Bossier City.

Entomologist Aaron Ashbrook notes that the state’s climate—characterized by high rainfall, moisture, a high water table, and abundant wood—creates an ideal environment for these pests. Homeowners are advised to be cautious of firewood, cardboard, or old lumber stored near foundations, as these provide easy access to structures.

Experts also suggest that residents turn off unnecessary outdoor lights at night during swarm season, as Formosan subterranean termite females are nocturnal and attracted to light.
