Louisiana homeowners warned to avoid daily overwatering of lawns this summer

The LSU Ag Center cautions that daily shallow watering harms southern lawns. Homeowners should aim for about 1 inch of water per week, applied in two or three deep soakings, preferably in the early morning. Overwatering creates shallow roots, invites fungal diseases and weeds, and reduces curb‑appeal.

Brown patches can also result from natural dormancy of cool‑season grasses, compacted soil that blocks water penetration, and uneven sprinkler coverage. Checking soil compaction and using core aeration are recommended to improve water infiltration.
