Louisiana hunter convicted of assaulting federal wildlife agents
A federal jury has convicted Carson McKoin, a 23-year-old man from Monroe, Louisiana, of assaulting, resisting, or impeding federal wildlife agents. The conviction follows an incident on January 19, 2024, during which McKoin fired a shot at a patrol boat, mistakenly believing the occupants were rival hunters encroaching on his duck hunting area.
The boat was actually occupied by agents from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service performing official duties. While McKoin claimed the discharge was merely a ‘signal shot,’ prosecutors successfully argued against this account during a three-day trial.
McKoin faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and three years of supervised release. Chief U.S. District Judge Terry A. Doughty has scheduled the sentencing for December 2.
