Louisiana Records First Net Population Gain in Six Years

A new migration analysis shows Louisiana added about 24,000 residents in 2024, marking its first net population increase since 2016. Net in‑migration turned positive with 12,060 more people moving in than leaving, while out‑migration fell to its lowest level since 2010.

The largest inflow groups were adults aged 25‑34 and children under 18, suggesting young families are choosing the state. State officials cite affordable housing, school options and growing job opportunities as key draws. Louisiana’s non‑farm employment reached a record 2.01 million in May, sustained above two million for four months, with construction and data‑center projects—such as Amazon’s Shreveport operations and Meta’s facility in Richland Parish—fueling the growth.

Challenges remain, including public‑safety concerns, limited housing supply and high insurance costs, which could affect whether the demographic trend endures.
